At our DR meeting a couple of weeks ago, I got mοre questions about bathroom decoration and tiling than usual during our session.

I have to say tiles are one of my favorite product categories in interior design and I feel that they are a unique investment, more than a new dining table or a new coat of paint. Mostly because of the fact that their installment or refurbishment includes a lot of dust and mess and that’s not something you wish to go through many times in life. I would gladly change and redecorate my bathroom tiling every year if it was possible, and dust/dirt-free of course.

The right choice of tiles can turn an average bathroom into a very interesting foray and bathroom tiling brands have done their best in recent years to evolve their production processes and meet the last decade’s standards in living.

From offering microban/antibacterial finishes and coats to having extra glazed or silk effect finishes for the bare foot to feel comfortable and calm, factories have really been searching for new ways to provide wellness through their materials. Eco-friendly production methods as well as reusing and recycling waste of products in production are in the game too in order to minimize their environmental impact.

Italy has a long tradition in tile production, dating back to Roman times and actually there are more than 130 companies currently active in the country. From Maestri Maiolicari handmade tiles to high tech ceramic slabs, Italy is a pioneer in this sector like no other, pushing the boundaries of generations of craftsmanship and creativity to create surfacing materials that are truly one-of-a-kind.

One of my favorite picks from this Spring releases is Intense.slab by Lea Ceramiche for its slick color result and the natural emotion of the surface. Sweet and playful, Tex by Mutina is also a staple in my favorites list as well as Marca Corona’s Miniature Soda which has a fresh and vibrant effect.

If you want to keep it simple but elegant then Bisazza’s Gustav Frost Collection is what you are looking for.

Extra tip; when picking tiles either for bathroom walls or for an external/internal floor space someone has to have figured out the core identity of the space as a whole. Tiles must be consistent with the vibe of a place and they have a story to tell.

Also don’t be afraid to blend them into spaces in a way of letting them flow through different rooms or corridors. Especially in a small apartment, keeping a tile flowing from corridor to bathroom floor emphasizes the feeling of movement and gives dimension.

Of course Cersaie 2024 is just around the corner so keep up with our edit and lives to see new collections and styles in tiling too.

Happy Summer to everyone,

Eleni
